Polarization in Gamma-Ray Bursts Produced by Pinch Discharge

چکیده
Large-voltage and high-temperature plasma columns produced by pinch discharge can generate γ-ray flashes with energy spectra and spectral evolution consistent with that observed in γ-ray bursts (GRBs). The inverse Compton scattering (ICS) during the discharge process can produce high linear polarization. The calculation indicates that the observed polarization depends on the angle between the observer’s line-of-sight to the GRB and the direction of the pinch discharge, but only weakly depends on observed γ-ray energy.

Heliospheric Origin of Gamma-ray Bursts
Systematic variations of average observational characteristics and correlation properties between different parameters of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with time from 1991 April to 1994 September are revealed. It is hard to explain the observed long-term variability by variations of experimental conditions. The variability of GRB properties with the time scale of months to years, together with the si...

متن کاملImplications of the Large Polarization Measured in Gamma Ray Bursts
The polarization of the prompt γ-ray emission has been measured in four bright gamma ray bursts (GRBs). It was nearly maximal in all cases, as predicted by the Cannonball (CB) model of GRBs long before the observations. These results are inconsistent with standard models of GRBs wherein the prompt emission is due to synchrotron radiation. A much smaller linear polarization is predicted by the C...
متن کاملPolarization Signature of Gamma-ray Bursts from Fragmented Fireballs
We study the polarization properties of the prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts produced by fragmented fireballs. Such fireballs, known in the literature under various names, are made by the superposition of many individual blobs, each of which produces a spike in the light curve. The differences between pulses are due both to the intrinsic diversity in the blobs’ properties and to their orieta...

The degree and the temporal evolution of linear polarization in the prompt and afterglow emission of gamma-ray bursts is a very robust diagnostic of some key features of gamma-ray bursts jets and their micro and macro physics. In this contribution, I review the current status of the theory of polarized emission from GRB jets during the prompt, optical flash, and afterglow emission. I compare th...
